Dr. Schiff reports on conceptual and practical issues related to 3 key issues for safer, more effective and patient-centered medication use — incorporating drug indication into prescribing and prescriptions for patients, the new SureScripts Cancel Rx functionality to better ensure that when medications are discontinued in the patients EMR, they are also stopped from being dispensed by the pharmacy, and ongoing efforts to monitor patients on medications, especially people newly started on these medications, to surveil for adverse drugs reactions and non-adherence.
He presents data from 3 recent/ongoing projects working on these issues including a head to head comparison of an indications-based prescribing prototype with CPOE ordering in Epic and CERNER EHR Systems.
